About me
Kasey Julian graduated from Oakland University's music program in 2021 and specialized in choral/general K-12 music. During her undergraduate studies, she received an academic award for her visual essay "After the Glow: Radium Girls" which was later published in the global academic journal, TheJump+. Using an undergraduate grant, she commissioned a piece by a local composer titled "Thoughts and Prayers: A Lockdown Project," which tackled social justice issues through music and visuals. Her interdisciplinary approach to music education has led to several speaking engagements, including multiple MMC sessions, MMEA’s General Music Fall Workshop, Oakland’s Schools “ARTS FIRST”, and the NAfME Collegiate National Summit. In 2021, she was among four individuals in the country who received a professional achievement award from the National Association for Music Education. In the same year she founded the Oakland University NAfME Collegiate Chapter and successfully supervised it to receive a Chapter Recognition award, among only seven chapters in the country that were granted this distinction that year. Kasey has taught private lessons and worked as a clinician and substitute in public, Montessori, charter, and virtual schools but currently teaches vocal/general music at Novi Community School District. Her students regularly perform in ensembles such as the Detroit Opera Youth Chorus and community theater musical shows in Michigan as well as MMEA Elementary Honors Choir. After school, Kasey directs several musical theater performances each year as well as a musical theater summer camp and advanced choir club. In 2024, her advanced choir club performed at the Volunteers of America Holidays of Hope Gala to help fundraise for Operation Backpack for Oakland Schools. Since working for NCSD she has received a grant for guest artists from the Novi Education Foundation (2023) and the MMEA Hilda Humphrey Service Award (2024). Kasey is also actively involved in music education initiatives such as previously serving as the Young Composers of Michigan Chair and now the MMEA New Directions Committee. Kasey also serves as a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coordinator in her district with a team of other teachers and is on the Arts Leadership Council for Oakland Schools. This spring Kasey performed in the Howell Opera House’s first performance on their original stage in the past 100 years, The Pirates of Penzance. Recently she was named an educator of music education excellence in Yamaha’s 40 Under 40 list for 2026.
